(On)Line: SFDFF Digital Season
Welcome to SFDFF’s inaugural Digital Season. Our Digital Season is a platform for sharing free and extraordinary dance film with our surrounding community in the absence of in-person events.
SUPPORT OUR DIGITAL SEASON
We are determined to weather the storm and continue to find unique ways to bring people together to celebrate the beauty and power of dance through film. By making a donation in support of Dance Film SF, you will help others enjoy our programs streamed online. Consider making a donation now and/or during the broadcast.
Ballet by the Bay
Our first ever Digital Season comes to a close with our season finale, Ballet by the Bay. Each short film features current and former dancers from local companies such as Alonzo King LINES Ballet and San Francisco Ballet, highlighting their many talents as performers, choreographers, and directors. Several artists will also make special appearances during the program to share their thoughts and experiences creating the films and will moderate a live discussion in the comment field.
The program was originally streamed on the SFDFF YouTube channel and here on our Digital Season page on July 8th at 7 PM.

SFDFF Celebrates Pride
Friday, June 25 @ 7PM. We’re proud to celebrate our LGBTQIA+ community at this special online event. This event is more than just a film screening, it’s a party!
We’ll start with instructions on how to make a special pride-themed cocktail by local dancer, sommelier, and mixologist Michael Wells. Then, we’ll screen mini-docs, screendance shorts, and other dance films by diverse LGBTQIA+ artists, highlighting colorful voices that are crucial to making our dance community vibrant. Lastly, we’ll have Jocquese Whitfield teach us how to vogue from home.
Raising Voices
On Wednesday, May 20 @ 7PM, we presented “Raising Voices,” a collection of mini-documentaries and experimental shorts spanning a wide cross-section of the dance community. Raising Voices celebrates the work of under-represented artists, amplifying their powerful messages. Previously screened at SFDFF, we brought back this poignant program at a time of crisis.
Select filmmakers and artists share their thoughts about their films and the moment we find ourselves in.
DELUXE
We’re collaborating with BalletBoyz to present their program Deluxe. BalletBoyz has allowed us to share this program with our community, which would be on tour right now under normal circumstances.
This live performance film will be streamable for one week starting May 27th.

The film was available to stream during a 48-hour period via our Vimeo On Demand platform Wednesday, April 29, at 8pm PST.
Solo Settings
The second program in our Digital Season, “Solo Settings,” is a collection of short films that explore how our imagination fills empty spaces, invents worlds, and both thrives and cries in isolation.
Featuring the premiere screening of Waters into Wilderness by Quinn Wharton and Lauren Edson, and films selected from our previous festivals. Select filmmakers introduced their films and joined us live in the comment field.
Season Launch with Post:Ballet
Dance Film SF launched its first-ever digital season with a special program of Post:Ballet films and a live conversation with Artistic Director Robert Dekkers.
The program featured the premiere screening of Post:Ballet’s stunning short film, Surface Down, and a special live performance capture of their ballet, Lavender Country. Viewers were able to chat with Post:Ballet’s Robert Dekkers and key collaborators throughout the viewing.
