Encore Shorts: A Double Feature Starring Lady Camden

Director's Statement

About the Films

In celebration of Pride Month, June’s edition of Encore Shorts is a double-feature of films from director Luke Willis and local icon Lady Camden.

The first film, I Don’t Need a Reason, celebrates Lady Camden’s accomplished history as a ballet dancer. Oscillating between a rehearsal studio and the glamorous War Memorial Opera House Green Room, this short not only showcases the gorgeous tutu created by Katty Scott for the runway of season 14 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, but also removes the nails, the lips, the hair, and shoes to reveal the artist behind Lady Camden.

“Lady Camden had come within inches of becoming a finalist on [RuRupaul’s Drag Race Season 14] and at this moment I wanted to intimately explore her inception. Why did Rex decide to pursue ballet and what parallels could I draw from that motivation and his motivation to then progress into drag and create Lady Camden? These are the questions that drove me in creating this film.”
— Director Luke Willis

Shot at San Francisco’s Oasis Cabaret & Nightclub, A Love Letter to San Francisco is Lady Camden’s joyous tribute to our city by the bay. It features a feast of cameos from local drag Kings and Queens performing to Scott McKenzie’s “San Francisco” remixed by PH Electro.

“I’m proud of my journey and to be representing Sacramento and the UK, two places that have totally shaped who I am today. But San Francisco is the place I truly found myself. [RuPaul] talks about finding your tribe and although it took me a while to do so the wait was well worth it. This video celebrates just a slice of the SF pie.”

I Don’t Need a Reason was featured at the 2022 San Francisco Dance Film Festival. A Love Letter to San Francisco appeared at SFDFF’s 2024 Spring Fling Festival.
