Encore Shorts: Momentum

Director's Statement

For Patrick, a tortilla chip started his moment of self-discovery. With exuberant dancing and magical passion, he shares his inspiration and invites everyone to participate. Even his mother. Momentum explores the concept of spontaneous authenticity and the synopsis of body and soul… through tortilla chips and dance.

Inventive, original, honest, and witty, Momentum has great energy and refreshes the genre with youthful vigor. It appeared at the 2013 San Francisco Dance Film Festival and was awarded both “Best Student Film” and “Best Screendance Film up to 15 Minutes”. The SFDFF jury applauded Seewald’s confident use of the film medium to convey the power and depth of the dance experience.

Momentum stars Patrick Hanna and Shoko Ito with directing, editing, and VFX by Boris Seewald. It features cinematography by Georg Simbeni and music by Ralf Hildenbeutel.

This month, we’re sharing a special bonus Encore Shorts film: Disco! Also directed by Boris Seewald, Disco is a handmade music video of approx 1,250 paintings on paper for “Disco” by Ralf Hildenbeutel. This short film uses an animation technique called rotoscoping to turn the real-life movements of dancers Althea Corlett and Simone Schmidt into a series of drawings and paintings to make each scene. Despite the wild variety of mediums and techniques used in the hundreds of sketches, the frame-to-frame continuity almost serves to enhance and accentuate the motions of the dancers. Disco appeared in the 2016 San Francisco Dance Film Festival where it was awarded “Best Visual Effect”.
