The Black Prince

A young man’s side profile is foregrounded, while a shadowy figure is seen behind flowing fabric. Overlaid at the bottom, the same young man is pictured standing in waist-deep flowing blue fabric, illuminated by soft light.

From enslaved child to royal courtier, the story of Couschi comes alive in this behind-the-scenes look at the Royal Swedish Ballet’s "Gustavia."

“The Black Prince” offers a rare glimpse into the making of “Gustavia,” a new ballet about Couschi, an African boy who rose to nobility in 18th-century Sweden. Following rehearsals led by French star Guillaume Diop, and informed by historical documents, the documentary examines race, legacy, and resilience, bringing Couschi’s extraordinary life into the spotlight through the language of dance.
