“Akwaaba,” which means “welcome” in the Twi language of Ghana, is a documentary short that follows Hua, a Singaporean dancer who travels to Ghana to train in Afro Dance and immerse herself in its cultural roots while searching for her purpose. Guided by African mentors, she deepens her understanding of the dance beyond its movements, discovering the history, community, and people that shape it. With the knowledge gained, Hua hopes to bring the culture of Afro Dance back home. Through her journey, the film explores the social power of Afro Dance and its ability to build communities that transcend national boundaries. As the dance continues to gain global popularity, “Akwaaba” also invites audiences to appreciate its cultural significance and encourages them, like Hua, to find the courage to step beyond the familiar and try something new.
