Inspired by The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, “Boys a Bug” explores the grotesque transformation of a man into an insect through ballet. Tracing his struggle with fear and confusion, he confronts — and ultimately loses — his sense of self. The film stars Jakub Rasek, soloist with the Czech National Ballet, alongside Romina Contreras, principal dancer with Les Ballets de Monte Carlo. Choreographed and produced by Fraser Roach, a dancer and celebrated choreographer with Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, the film is directed by Laurie Lynch, an acclaimed filmmaker whose work has been presented at the Cannes Film Festival.
Conceived as a true ‘film dance’ rather than a documentation of choreography, “Boys a Bug” places narrative and cinematography at its center, allowing movement to serve the emotional and psychological journey of the character. Set to Jacques Offenbach’s iconic “Barcarolle: Belle nuit, ô nuit d’amour” (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), the music is exclusively orchestrated for this film by musical prodigy Josef Kurtz and performed by the Guildhall School of Music & Drama Orchestra.
