Singer/songwriter Patrick Haggerty is credited for writing America’s first gay country music album, Lavender Country. Released in 1973, this album was originally a bootleg, community-sponsored project for gay liberationists. After distributing just 1000 LP albums and a few performances, Lavender Country was all but lost until 2014, when its rerelease by an indie-record label took off like wildfire. In 2017, Post:Ballet and Haggerty collaborated on an evening-length dance, music, and storytelling experience highlighting the work and legacy of Lavender Country. ‘Come Out to Lavender Country’ encapsulates this performance and invites the viewer to step inside the performance.
