Juneau’s mountains, beaches, and rainforests serve the central dancer as a creative solace during a time when many other avenues of expression were coming to an abrupt halt. Displaced from the studio by a national quarantine, the film’s director began to dance not in the natural surroundings, but with them. As a snowy winter closed in, we explore the resilience as well as the vulnerability of Juneau’s natural wonders and the way in which they have kept the beauty of art alive in the body.
Solace is a work created for, about, and in collaboration with Juneau, Alaska, Lingít Aaní, the ancestral land of the Auk Kwan people
