Steps of Freedom reveals how Irish dance was shaped over centuries through interactions with many cultures as it evolved from a simple folk dance to become a global phenomenon loved by millions around the world. The film shows how Irish dance has both been influenced by and influenced the dance of many cultures, including African-American dance, and how it developed as an expression of resistance.
The documentary features stunning original performances by some of the greatest Irish dance practitioners of the present day and a wealth of archive materials including films, photographs and witness accounts revealing how Irish dance has been practiced through history. There is a strong American current running throughout the story as we show how the Irish diaspora played a pivotal part in shaping the form particularly during the last century.
Program concludes with a live performance by dancers from the Boyle Irish Dance Academy of San Francisco.
