Just Dance the Steps: Hans van Manen

Hans van Manen, a 90-year-old white man, wears a black jacket, white collard shirt, and striped tie. He sits posing for the camera in a portrait-style photoshoot. He balances his head on his hands and wears gold rings with tortoise shell glasses.

On December 17, the dance world lost a true visionary. Legendary Dutch choreographer Hans van Manen passed away at the age of 93, leaving behind an extraordinary body of work that has shaped contemporary ballet for generations.

In November, the San Francisco Dance Film Festival had the honor of presenting the feature documentary Just Dance the Steps as part of our 2025 Online Festival. In celebration of van Manen’s life, artistry, and enduring influence, we are making the film available to stream once more for a limited time, December 20–January 31.

Just Dance the Steps offers an intimate portrait of van Manen at age 90, reflecting on a life inseparable from movement. Filmed over five years by director Willem Aerts, the documentary follows van Manen through studios and stages in Amsterdam, Düsseldorf, and The Hague, revealing the passion, rigor, and clarity that defined his work. This is not only a tribute to a singular artist, but a testament to a lifetime devoted to dance.

We invite you to watch and celebrate the remarkable legacy of Hans van Manen.
